It could be seen as a case of misplaced honor gone awry -- with fatal consequences.

East Palo Alto police announced Tuesday they had arrested two males they suspect tried to kill each other but instead accidentally shot the women they were trying to defend during a fight -- killing one and wounding the other.

The bizarre incident began Friday at about 10:30 p.m. with a street fight between two women, Melevea Fifita, 19, and Seu Tuimavave, 21, in the 2700 block of Fordham Street in East Palo Alto, police said.

A group drove by in a car and began yelling insults at a group of girls hanging out on the sidewalk, San Mateo County prosecutor Steve Wagstaffe said.

"It was girls yelling insults at one another," Wagstaffe said. "As to why specifically they did that, I don't know."

The insults turned into fisticuffs. As the fight escalated, Absalom Tuimavave, 18, got involved to back up his sister, while a 17-year-old male intervened on behalf of Fifita, police Lt. Tom Alipio said. The 17-year-old boy pulled out a handgun, while Absalom Tuimavave produced a shotgun, police said.

As the males shot at each other, the 17-year-old inadvertently hit Fifita, killing her, authorities said. Absalom Tuimavave fired his shotgun at the 17-year-old but accidentally hit his sister in the pelvis, according to police.

"It's one of those cases that would have been 'Westside Story,' but today it's gunplay," Wagstaffe said.

Seu Tuimavave was hospitalized and still in critical condition early Tuesday, Wagstaffe said.

Both suspects were arrested Monday on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Formal charges may be filed today or Thursday, Wagstaffe said.

Murder charges could be brought against both suspects, even if only one delivered a fatal shot, he said.

"There is some legal theory that says if you come to a fight prepared to use gunplay, you can be held accountable for everything that happens," Wagstaffe said. "What we have to do is see if that applies. I don't know if it applies here."

If charged with murder, the juvenile suspect will be charged as an adult, Wagstaffe said.
